Definition

HRV reflects variation in the timing between successive heart beats and is influenced by autonomic regulation. In endurance athletes, trends can contribute to monitoring adaptation, but single readings are noisy and both high and low values can occur in different contexts.

Practical use

Measure under repeatable conditions and interpret rolling trends with sleep, training load, illness symptoms and subjective readiness rather than reacting to one morning value.
