Definition
A spectrum of heat-related medical conditions occurring during or after exercise in hot or stressful environments. Exertional heat illness spans a spectrum from less severe heat-related syndromes to exertional heat stroke, a medical emergency characterized by severe hyperthermia with central nervous system dysfunction.
Practical use
This definition is educational, not diagnostic; persistent, severe or worsening symptoms should be assessed by a qualified clinician. Confusion, collapse, altered behavior or other central nervous system signs during heat exposure require emergency action and immediate medical evaluation.
