Definition

A syndrome of headache and other symptoms occurring after recent ascent to altitude. High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema is a severe, potentially fatal non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema that develops at altitude and may present with marked breathlessness, reduced exercise tolerance, cough and hypoxemia. It is a medical emergency.

Practical use

Treat suspected HAPE as an emergency: stop ascent, arrange prompt descent when feasible and obtain urgent medical/rescue assistance. Do not rely on a glossary entry for treatment decisions.
